Like many guitar players, my journey began with hearing a sound I couldn't forget. One night I was watching Austin City Limits when a guitarist came on whose tone completely stopped me in my tracks. It was Stevie Ray Vaughan. That moment changed everything. I knew I wanted a Stratocaster, and I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life chasing great guitar tone. That search eventually led me far beyond simply learning to play. Like so many players, I reached the point where I wondered if my guitar could sound better. I began experimenting with different pickups, discovering that each one had its own personality. What started as curiosity quickly became an obsession with understanding why. Working at Callaham Guitars gave me the confidence to begin building pickups on my own, but it also taught me that craftsmanship isn't about shortcuts or marketing. It's about consistency, attention to detail, and refusing to accept "good enough." For more than a decade, I've pursued one goal: to build pickups that inspire musicians every time they plug in. That pursuit has taken me down countless rabbit holes. I've studied vintage instruments, experimented with winding techniques, tested wire from different suppliers, compared magnets from foundries around the world, and spent years listening to the smallest changes that most people would never notice. Every pickup in my catalog exists because it earned its place through hundreds of hours of experimentation, comparison, and refinement. Over time, I realized something important. I wasn't interested in offering dozens of custom options or building pickups to chase every trend. I wanted to create a focused collection of designs that represent exactly what I believe a great pickup should be. Each model has its own voice, but every one reflects the same philosophy: dynamic, expressive, musical, and built to become part of the instrument rather than simply another component. My goal has never been to become the biggest pickup company. My goal is much simpler. I want someone to plug into an amplifier, play the first chord, and immediately forget about pickups altogether. I want them to stop thinking about equipment and start thinking about music. If that happens, then I've done my job. Why "Rumpelstiltskin"? The name begins with the old fairy tale of The Miller's Daughter. In the story, a poor miller boasts that his daughter can spin straw into gold. Faced with an impossible task, she receives unexpected help from the mysterious Rumpelstiltskin. That story has always resonated with me because building pickups can sometimes feel much the same. They begin as simple materials—wire, magnets, vulcanized fiber, cloth covered wire, and countless hours at the workbench. Individually, they're ordinary. But when every detail is carefully considered and everything comes together just right, those humble materials become something capable of inspiring musicians for decades. No magic.
