Pickups for 1951 Precision Bass

Original Punch™ Bass Pickup

Inspired by the groundbreaking 1951 Precision Bass.

The original 1951 Precision Bass forever changed the role of the bass guitar. As the first commercially successful solid-body electric bass, it gave musicians a portable, reliable alternative to the upright bass and helped shape the sound of modern popular music.

It’s single-coil pickup produced a voice unlike anything that had come before it. It was direct, articulate, dynamic, and wonderfully expressive. Before the introduction of the split-coil design in 1957, this was the sound that laid the foundation for the electric bass.

My “Original Punch™” bass pickup is inspired by those pioneering instruments.

Built with vintage-correct 42 AWG Plain Enamel magnet wire and Alnico 5 rod magnets, this pickup delivers a wonderfully open and immediate response with exceptional note definition. The low end remains tight and focused, the midrange is clear and punchy, and the high end retains a natural articulation that allows every note to speak with authority.

Compared to the later split-coil Precision Bass pickup, the Original Punch™ has a more direct, airy character with outstanding touch sensitivity and dynamic response. It captures the lively personality of the earliest electric basses while preserving the unmistakable warmth and musicality that made Leo Fender's original design so revolutionary.

Rather than simply reproducing vintage specifications, I spent years studying what made the finest early Fender pickups so musically compelling. Every aspect of this pickup was refined through careful listening, comparison, and development to capture the spirit of those remarkable originals while providing the consistency expected from a modern boutique pickup.

Whether you're chasing authentic early-'50s tones, classic rock and roll, country, rockabilly, blues, Americana, or simply appreciate the clarity and immediacy of a great single-coil bass pickup, the Original Precision Bass™ delivers a voice that is both historically significant and musically inspiring.
